Pench (MP/Maharashtra)

The Landscape

Pench Tiger Reserve straddles the Madhya Pradesh–Maharashtra border, with the Pench river running through the centre. The forest is dry teak and mixed deciduous — more open than Kanha, with a network of grass-floored glades and the river providing a central wildlife corridor. The Pench reservoir, formed by a dam on the river's southern end, creates a large open water body that draws animals during the dry months.

Pench is frequently described as the "other" Central India park — less famous than Kanha or Bandhavgarh, more accessible from Nagpur, and often significantly less crowded. For photographers who want similar quality of encounters without the vehicle density of the more famous parks, it is the right choice.

The Turia gate on the MP side and the Turiya area are the main photography zones; the Maharashtra side (Navegaon-Nagzira section) is less visited and wilder in character.

Key Species

Mammals

• Bengal tiger — Pench has a healthy population and well-habituated individuals in the Turia zone. Several tigresses with established territories along the river corridor are known to guides, and the encounters tend to be at more relaxed pace than the crowded scenes at Bandhavgarh.
• Indian leopard — more reliably seen here than in many Central India parks; the teak forest edges and the drier terrain suit leopard better than dense sal. Dawn sightings on the open tracks are not uncommon.
• Indian wild dog (dhole) — Pench is one of the best parks in India for dhole photography. Packs of 8–15 are seen regularly, and the open terrain allows prolonged following of hunts and pack dynamics. The dhole's social behaviour — greeting rituals, communal pup-rearing, cooperative hunting — gives extended behavioural photography sequences.
• Wild boar — enormously abundant; large males with tusks are formidable-looking subjects.
• Gaur, chital, sambar, nilgai — all present in good numbers.

Birds

• Crested serpent eagle — one per clearing, it seems; Pench has high densities.
• Malabar pied hornbill — in the taller teak forest.
• Indian roller, bee-eaters — on open perches throughout.
• White-eyed buzzard, shikra — small raptors of the forest edge.
• Common kingfisher, pied kingfisher — along the Pench river.
• Painted spurfowl — a beautifully patterned spurfowl of dry rocky terrain; found at the park's stone outcrops.
• Indian pitta (October–March) — in the leaf litter of the forest understorey.

Photography Notes

Pench's teak forest gives a notably different visual quality from Kanha's sal meadows. The teak canopy in the dry season drops its leaves entirely, flooding the forest floor with light — unusual in Indian reserves, and very useful for bird photography. The skeletal grey branches against blue sky in February–March, with dhole packs moving underneath, are atmospheric images.

The Pench river during the dry months (March–May) concentrates almost everything — tigers, leopards, dhole, gaur — along a narrow corridor of permanent water. Long sessions at the river viewpoints, positioned before dawn, can produce encounter after encounter on productive mornings.

Nagpur airport is 90 minutes from the main gate, making Pench the most logistically accessible Central India park. This also means it can be combined with Tadoba (also 2–3 hours from Nagpur) for a double-park trip that maximises species variety — Pench for leopard and dhole, Tadoba for tiger sightings in open dry forest.
