The Landscape

Keoladeo Ghana National Park — universally known as Bharatpur — is a flat, man-made wetland that was originally a duck-hunting reserve for the Maharajas of Bharatpur. The 29 sq km park is a mosaic of shallow lakes, marshes, dry grassland, and scrub forest, all connected by a grid of elevated paths and tracks passable on foot, bicycle, or cycle-rickshaw.

The combination of flatness, open visibility, and a network of paths that put you at water level with the birds makes Bharatpur unique in Indian birding. You are not looking up at birds in trees — you are eye-level with herons in the reeds, ducks on the water, and raptors on low perches. This translates directly into photograph quality: clean backgrounds, eye contact, and natural behaviour.

Photography Notes

Bharatpur's flat, open paths make it the most light-efficient birding location in India. At dawn, the low sun skims across the water surface and lights the birds from the side at near-perfect angles. The cycle-rickshaws allow silent approach to within a few metres of feeding birds in the water.

A 400–500 mm covers most of the work, but the cycle-rickshaw-based photography at close range also rewards a 300 mm or even a 70–200 mm for environmental shots that include the water surface and reeds.

The grassland areas in the southern section of the park hold Sarus cranes, painted sandgrouse, and raptors — a different but equally valuable photography zone from the wetlands. Early morning visits to these areas, separate from the main wetland circuit, are worth planning.

November to January is peak season: the migrant ducks are present, the stork colony is at its most active, and the cool weather makes the long walks comfortable. February onwards the ducks start departing; March is the last good month before the summer heat.
