Hampi + Daroji / Bear Sanctuary region

The Landscape

The Hampi–Daroji region is unlike anything else on this list. The Vijayanagara ruins at Hampi sit in a surreal landscape of massive granite boulders, stacked and balanced by geological chance into towers, arches, and labyrinths that look designed rather than natural. The Tungabhadra river runs through the middle, reflecting temples, coracles, and the boulder formations in flat, mirror water at dawn.

Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, about 15 km from Hampi, protects a dry scrub and boulder landscape that is primary sloth bear habitat. The sanctuary has a viewing platform overlooking a feeding area where bears come reliably in the late afternoon — making it one of the few places in India where sloth bears are photographable with consistency.

This is a hybrid destination: part heritage landscape photography, part wildlife.

Key Species

Mammals

• Sloth bear — the main draw at Daroji. These are shaggy, powerful animals with a distinctive white chest mark. They are most active in the cooler morning and late afternoon. The platform at Daroji allows steady, elevated shooting without disturbing the bears. Litters of two cubs are common in December–February, giving exceptional behavioural photography.
• Indian leopard — present in the boulder-strewn terrain; the rocky landscape is ideal leopard habitat, but sightings are largely nocturnal.
• Bonnet macaque — troops move through the ruins; excellent subjects for behavioural and portrait photography amid the temple architecture.
• Indian grey mongoose — common in the scrubland around Daroji.

Birds

• Indian eagle-owl — roosts in caves and crevices in the boulders; one of India's most impressive owls, with prominent ear-tufts and orange eyes.
• Rock bush-quail — endemic to peninsular India; the male's rufous face patch is distinctive.
• White-browed fantail — active, cooperative, and frequently close — a good subject for behaviour shots.
• Indian roller — perches on telegraph wires and bare branches throughout the scrub; the flight reveals a blaze of electric blue on the wings.
• Brown rock-chat — a small, confiding bird that treats the ruins as its natural habitat, which in a sense they are now.
• Pied bushchat — common on open perches in the scrubland.
• Eurasian hoopoe — striking crest and barred plumage; forages on the ground near the ruins.
• Painted sandgrouse — found in the open rocky areas near Daroji; flocks flush dramatically.

Photography Notes

Hampi is fundamentally a landscape and architectural photography destination. The boulders create unique natural framing opportunities for the ruins, and the quality of evening light on the old stone — warm, directional, raking across carved surfaces — is extraordinary. The Virupaksha temple gopuram and Vittala temple complex are the architectural centrepieces, but the anonymous boulders and river ghats are where the most original compositions are found.

Dawn on the Tungabhadra — shooting from the coracle boats or from the ghat steps — gives the classic Hampi light: long horizontal gold across water, with the Hemakuta hill silhouetted behind.

At Daroji, the afternoon platform session starting around 4 pm is the wildlife photography opportunity. Arrive early, settle in, and wait. The bears come to the fig trees and honey-bait in predictable windows. A 400–500 mm is needed from the platform distance.

For bird photography, early morning walks among the ruins are productive — the combination of old stone, scrub, and the river edge creates multiple microhabitats in a small area.

Practical Notes

Hampi is easily reached from Hospet (Hosapete) — 13 km away, with rail connections to Bengaluru and Hubballi. Hampi itself has limited accommodation on the north bank (budget guesthouses); Hospet has better hotels. Combine a full day in the ruins with two afternoon sessions at Daroji for the most complete experience.
